Australian Hardwood Custom Furniture - Modern or Contemporary
January 12 2021
Is there a difference?
If you’ve been researching furniture styles, you’d be forgiven for concluding they’re the same, because, we often read and hear the words used interchangeably. In fact, they are two separate and distinct design styles.
Contemporary; what's popular currently, changing as trends change and incorporating a variety of styles.
Modern; as a rule, characterises the design aesthetic from the middle of the 20th century. It was/is modern in that it has no similarities to furniture styles that came before it.
Confusion also comes from the fact that, one of the current contemporary trends mingles “mid-century modern” quite liberally into it's designs, with its clean lines and simplicity. So, a lot of what is popular - contemporary - today, takes its cue from the “modern” mid-century aesthetic.
Here at Wildwood Designs we aim to incorporate the adaptability of contemporary design with the classic designs we’re all familiar with; a few of them being ‘modern’, ‘retro’, maybe even ‘vintage’.
That being said, we’re in no way restricted to or by a particular design style.
