The reclaimed hardwood timber used here at Wildwood Designs has been salvaged from old buildings, bridges and the like. Generally speaking the timber is native to Australia as non-natives weren't used in this type of construction.
When these timbers were originally harvested, way 'back in the day', they came from the bush not plantations. So, they have a LOT of character lines due to the fact they grew in a harsher environment - winds, drought, flooding, fires, critters making their homes in them etc... All these experiences are shown in the timbers' character; meandering grain lines, sap pockets, knots and motley tones.
And then the obvious features from its use in its former life, moisture exposure, rust staining, nails, bolts, hammer strikes. All these add to the character of the timber before it begins it's new life as the gorgeous furniture piece you love.
As a result, using recycled timber can be more expensive due to the time needed to machine them into usable lengths; and the labor intensive job of removing many, many nails.
But what a finish!
